Megan and Evan’s engagement session at Roan Mountain State Park was one of those sessions that felt like an adventure from start to finish.
The hike? Wet. Slippery. A little chaotic.
Megan and Evan handled it like pros. They’re big hikers and love being outside, so it didn’t faze them at all. I, on the other hand, was absolutely huffing and puffing trying to keep up. Not my finest moment, but we made it.
We started out along Carvers Gap Trail hoping we’d get at least a little bit of those wide-open mountain views. Instead, we got fog. Like… thick fog. The kind that rolls in and out and makes everything feel super quiet and a little surreal.

But honestly? It ended up being so good.
The weather kept changing every few minutes. The sun would peek out, then disappear again. At one point, a rainbow showed up out of nowhere and then just faded back into the mist like it never happened. It felt like the mountain was just doing its own thing and we were along for the ride.
Once the fog really settled in, we found this small area of trees and stayed there for a bit. That ended up being my favorite part. Everything felt soft and moody and a little dreamy. No big views, no distractions—just Megan and Evan being themselves, laughing, hanging onto each other, totally in their element.

Roan Mountain Tennessee Engagement Photographer
We didn’t get that classic Roan Mountain golden hour everyone talks about, and I thought that might be a bummer—but it really wasn’t. On the way back down, the clouds broke just enough to give us the prettiest pink and orange sky for a few quick photos before it faded.
It felt like the perfect way to end it.
Sessions like this are always a good reminder that things don’t have to go “perfectly” to turn out better than expected. You just kind of lean into it and see what happens. Megan and Evan did exactly that, and it made the whole session feel really natural and easy.
Honestly, I’d take a foggy, unpredictable Roan Mountain day like this any time.
